The Paths in the Terra dei Cammini
This territory that the site shows you has been called for a long time "the Land of Saint Benedict" (Terra Sancti Benedicti). Recently, it has also been referred to as the "Land of Paths," considering the development of Path Tourism and taking note of the numerous Paths that cross the territory. The geographical location of the territory, at the center of three Regions: Lazio, Campania, and Molise, along with the presence of the Abbey, has favored the development of primarily religious Paths.
In addition to the Path of Saint Benedict, which reaches Montecassino from Norcia, there is the Path of Saint Philip Neri that starts from the Abbey and goes to Gaeta, the Path of Saint Thomas Aquinas, which starts from Aquino and leads to Fondi, where the saint died. Then there are two European Cultural Itineraries: the Francigena in the South, Casilina variant, and the Liberation Route Europe, which connects places of Remembrance spread across Europe. It integrates what is rightly called the Great Path of Memory in the territory, which connects the Museum of Historiale, located in Cassino, with all the municipalities and places where battles of the Second World War have left their mark.
Alongside these more well-known Paths and Itineraries, there are also the Marian ones. The one related to Santa Maria di Loreto, which is celebrated on December 10 and leads the faithful from different municipalities to walk the Path on the night before, and that of the kiss of the two Madonnas, which takes place on Easter Monday and is traveled by the citizens of Castrocielo on one side and the citizens of Colle San Magno on the other to reach the Mother Church of Santa Maria in cielo on Mount Asprano.
Lastly, there are all the Paths that follow the trails of the mountains and lead to the most remote villages, allowing not only a closer contact with nature and freely grazing animals but also offering beautiful views of the Liri valley.
We must not forget a special Path, the one that is done on certain stretches of the Garigliano river with canoes.
Our commitment to the continuous improvement of all these Paths has led us since 2017 to publicly reflect on how to enhance their quality and accessibility, while at the same time how to improve everything needed by those who undertake a Path. This has led to the creation of the International Fair of Path Ergonomics, whose first edition was held in October 2024 and constitutes another reason to “walk” around here each year. A way also to celebrate Saint Benedict, who was declared the Patron of Europe by Paul VI precisely in October, in 1964.
