Path of Romanity
The territory, due to its geographical location and physical structure, has been attractive to all beings who chose to live there and fought to remain, since the earliest times. For this reason, archaeologists from many universities around the world have chosen this territory to bring to light the millennia-old history it preserves. For you, it can be an ideal place to learn about the history of the world by directly 'walking' among the places where part of the heritage has already emerged (the archaeological areas) and where some parts are carefully preserved (the Museums).
The protection of the valley by the surrounding mountains, the abundance of water from the rivers that cross it, the proximity to the sea for trade, and the central geographical position in Italy have made this territory ideal for living and thriving.
Dinosaurs were the first to understand this, of which many traces still remain. The Italic peoples who alternated in owning parts of these lands understood it too. The Volsci, the Aurunci, and the Samnites lived in this territory. Then the Romans, after many battles, defeated the Samnites and seized the land; an ideal territory to rest after wars. It is no coincidence that the amphitheater you can visit in the archaeological park of Casinum was built by Unmidia Quadratilla (28-107 AD), a matron from Cassinate.
But the Romans built important structures to the right and left of the Via Latina, which served to reach Magna Graecia faster, to the South. You will find the archaeological area of Aquinum, which is said to have been inhabited by 40,000 people, and you can visit the Museum of Aquino where you will find the entire story recounted, from the Paleolithic onward. Alternatively, you can go see the archaeological area of Pignataro Interamna, which is still full of surprises to uncover, in addition to the already enjoyable amphitheater.
If you then fast forward in time and are interested to know more about the Middle Ages and the role the Lombards played in this territory, you won't find a better place. Here, the combination of the Monks of Montecassino and the empires that succeeded one another along with the Saracens who made continuous incursions allows you to reconstruct the entire history up to the unification of Italy. If you visit during the summer months, you may meet young archaeologists who are excavating and their teachers who accompany them, eager to 'show you history' and not just to satisfy it.
The historical itineraries you can follow in this territory for different historical periods are therefore varied. We will show them to you as historians from around the world help us describe them correctly.
