Cervaro - San Vittore del Lazio
CategoriaThis stage connects the two towns and enjoys the same scenery. The route passes through fields of olive trees on both the right and left, and the valley with its small hills, which enclose it at certain points, is beautifully displayed.
Through some of these openings, Allied soldiers passed to overcome the Gustav Line during World War II, and there are several sites in the area that remember the battles and the countries that fought. At the end of the flat yet hilly route, the road climbs to a hill of 220 meters, where the castle of San Vittore stands, once truly imposing. It originally had 23 towers, almost all quadrangular, and walls that stretched for a kilometer and a half enclosing the medieval village.
The castle was built in the first half of the 11th century by a Benedictine community from the Abbey of Montecassino to protect the original church. With World War II, many towers and arches were lost, but walking through the narrow streets of the village, one can still feel a bit of the medieval atmosphere.
If you make the pilgrimage during the Christmas season, you can admire the famous Christmas Tree created on the slopes of the mountain, made of many lights that turn on at night and make it visible even to all motorists traveling on the Autostrada del Sole that passes below, in the valley.
