Aquino - Piedimonte San Germano
CategoriaThis is a route that crosses the entire lower part of the municipality of Piedimonte San Germano. Exiting the Aquino station and arriving at the Casilina, you walk a short stretch on the sidewalk that borders the road and then cross it to enter the inner part of the territory of Piedimonte San Germano.
You walk on quiet streets, looking to the right at the Casilina and to the left at the hills through which the Via di San Benedetto passes. Once you reach the center of the town, you can make a detour and go up the stairs that connect the lower part of the town with the Castle located at the higher part, allowing you to admire the entire Liri valley.
It is this position that has destined this place to be a fortress. The origin of the first settlement of the Castle can be dated back to around the 4th century BC, created by the Volsci. After the Volsci came the Samnites, the Romans, and the Barbarians until the structure came under the dominion of the Lombards.
When they converted to Christianity, the Castle was donated by Duke Gisulfo to Montecassino. After the looting by the Saracens, the place was abandoned. Count Adenolfo of Aquino had it rebuilt in 1061. It thus became the stronghold of the Land of San Benedetto. Next to the Castle, there is a sculpture in memory of those who fell in World War II, particularly the Polish soldiers.
If you want to stop by and eat something, there are excellent restaurants at reasonable prices.
