Rocca Janula - San Vittore del Lazio
CategoriaFrom the Castle, one can descend to Cassino and take the Casilina towards Venafro until the exit for San Vittore del Lazio, or one can follow the hilly route of the Francigena in the South and then rise to Cervaro and continue to San Vittore del Lazio.
In Cervaro's territory, one can go down again to visit the Castle of Torrocolo located on Mount Trocchio. The Castle was built in 1057 and is still well-preserved despite earthquakes, the plague of the 1600s, and the bombings of World War II.
In the area, there are several interesting caves, one of which, named "the hermit's cave," seems to have also been used by Saint Benedict. Naturally, it was also built by the Benedictines to monitor the valley and the movements of anyone crossing it.
San Vittore is quite close to Cervaro at about 220 meters above sea level and is a small fortified town. The perimeter of the town is made up of towers, almost all rectangular, and walls stretching one and a half kilometers. Originally, there were twenty-three, but now only a few remain, also because San Vittore suffered the consequences of the battles of World War II.
The walls are well-preserved, and the internal village truly gives the sense of being inside a medieval town. This reality is also a work of the Benedictines from the Abbey who realized it in the first half of the 11th century AD according to the logic of "Castrum."
