Aquino - Piedimonte San Germano alta
CategoriaFrom Aquino, the road leads to Piedimonte San Germano, whose lower part unfolds around the Via Casilina. On one side are the houses, and on the other is the Fiat settlement.
A staircase leads to the Castle of the Counts of Aquino. Here too, Adenolfo II took concrete action. The site is certainly strategic as it dominates the entire Liri valley, and for this reason, it was used by the Ausoni, then by the Volsci, the Samnites, the Romans, and the barbarians, and was plundered by the Saracens. In 1061, Adenolfo II had it rebuilt, equipping it with a wider defensive wall, thus from the 10th century AD it became the stronghold of the Land of San Benedetto. Unfortunately, the Castle suffered heavy bombardments during the Second World War and was restored in 2001.
