Da Piedimonte San Germano a Villa Santa Lucia
CategoriaYou are walking the last stage of the Way of Saint Benedict, which starts from Roccasecca and ends at the Abbey of Montecassino.
A little further ahead, turning right, you can descend into the valley, where, before crossing the Casilina, you will find the route of the Via Francigena in the South, the Casilina variant that passes under the Abbey and intersects with many other religious and non-religious paths. (PATHS)
If you continue along the Via Francigena in the South towards Cassino, you will find the church known as "del Colloquio" in the locality of Pittoni. Here, Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica used to meet once a year. Gregory the Great recounts that right here, on February 6, 547 AD, a miracle occurred: a huge storm forced Saint Benedict to stay with his sister for one night, despite the prohibition contained in the Rule "Ora et Labora et Lege". (SAINTS)
That road largely follows the ancient via Latina that the Romans built to reach Magna Grecia and you can visit the archaeological areas of Casinum, Lirenas, Interamna, and Aquinum, and gather information at the national museum of Cassino and the communal museum of Aquino. (ARCHAEOLOGY)
If you climb along the road that leads to Terelle and reach the village, you can see the medieval Rocca built between 1117 and 1127 by the Lombard Counts of Aquino, Lando and his son Pandolfo. It was created to control the very ancient middle-mountain road from Aquino to Atina. If you plan to tour the castles of the area, you will discover a historically fascinating heritage from the Middle Ages. (CASTLES)
If you instead continue straight, you will find the village of Villa Santa Lucia. In the square in front of the town hall, you will find one of the symbols of the Great Path of Memory, the famous work by Carlo Rambaldi called "Vela". It depicts a war context with a bicycle that represents, at the same time, the destruction caused by war and the hope for peace.
The Municipality is indeed fully included in the Great Path of Memory and in the Liberation Route Europe (LRE). After the square of the Municipality, continuing towards the Abbey, you can admire the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie and then by climbing up a road, mostly unpaved, and passing in front of the area where the Goddess Fortuna was venerated, you will arrive at the ruins of the monastery of Madonna dell'Albaneta and the sites where many of the battles of Montecassino were fought in 1944. (MEMORY)
You have many travel alternatives and many discoveries to make because the territory is rich in many heritage sites that the local communities are willing to share with you if you decide to stay a little longer in this area.
