Da Roccasecca a Castrocielo
CategoriaYou are walking the last stage of the Way of Saint Benedict, which concludes at Montecassino. Along the route, you will pass through the villages of some municipalities in the so-called Land of Paths, all worth visiting for their millennia-old history. On your left, you have one. It is called Caprile, and the road that goes uphill through it, after the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, continues up to the splendid Falesia located on the slope of Mount Asprano, at 300 meters above sea level. Below the Falesia, you can visit the wonderful hermitage of Sant'Angelo in Asprano.
At the end of this stage, you will be embraced by the hospitality of the Benedictine monks according to the teachings of the Rule (Ora et Labora et Lege) of Saint Benedict on hospitality (chapter 53).
Continuing on, you will find the village of Castrocielo, from where you will proceed toward your destination. However, if you descend to the right, in the Liri valley, you can seek the footprints of dinosaurs, relive the history of the Italic peoples (Volsci and Sanniti), and understand the greatness of Imperial Rome by visiting the archaeological sites of: Aquinum, Casinum, and Lirenas Interamna, the municipal museum of Aquino, and the national museum of Cassino.
If you prefer to visit the medieval castles, it is advisable to go back and visit what remains of the castle of Roccasecca, climb to Colle San Magno and from there reach Terelle, then descend to Cassino, visit San Vittore del Lazio, and return to Piedimonte San Germano. Alternatively, you can continue to Piedimonte San Germano and take the route in reverse.
The closer you get to the final destination, the more immersed you will be in places that bear the stark testimony of the consequences of World War II. You can thus choose to follow the Great Path of Memory, which is now also part of the European Cultural Itinerary of the "Liberation Route Europe", and stop at the Historial Museum in Cassino.
